Studley Leaders
At Studley Green we encourage all of our pupils to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society. There are a number of positions of responsibility for the pupils in our school and as there is a strong take-up by pupils of the opportunities available, most of these positions have an application and interview process. Please see Mr Orr if you are interested in becoming a Studley Leader.
School Council
We have 16 School Councillors who represent the voices and opinions of their classmates. These are voted for by their peers. We currently have 2 children representing each mainstream class and 2 from all the Resource Base classes.
They usually hold a meeting together once a fortnight to ensure they can share any good ideas or to try to resolve any difficulties.
The School Councillors are a vital part of Studley Green Primary School, and they form an ongoing part of the school voice. The Year 6 school councillors take turns to be the Chairperson, whose role it is to take down plans of action at each meeting. These are then swiftly brought to the Head teacher's notice and may also often be taken to the following staff meeting. The School Councillors know that their voice is important and that anything they say WILL be listened to and dealt with.
These are just a few of the exciting ideas and changes that Studley Green School Councillors have brought about:
-
Chosen an all-weather running surface for the school field (as a solution to being able to use the school field when it is wet)
-
Chosen new play equipment with a soft surface underneath for a Tyre-Play area. (This involved a visit to another school for research, plus design ideas and made a safe area for all children, so less grazes!)
-
Held 'coffee & cake' mornings, serving members of our local community in the school and also out in the local community Residential Care home. (This required everyone to learn to interact with different adults, speak clearly, listen carefully and to make and serve tea and coffee including carrying cups and saucers!)
-
Interviewed new members of staff and important people in the community
Digital Leaders
Digital leaders are pupil monitors for the technology that is used in our school. They are children who are interested, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about computing. They are internet safety experts, support their friends in class and develop their own skills to become a showcase for what is achievable with technology. Typical responsibilities for Digital Leaders include: testing new computing resources, sharing their skills and expertise with other pupils and teachers (the image on the right shows one of our digital leaders supporting learning during the Hour of Code week), setting up ICT equipment in classrooms and delivering internet safety messages around the school. For more online safety information please visit our dedicated page here.
Mini Police
Studley Green Primary School takes part in Wiltshire’s Mini Police scheme. At the start of the year Year 6 pupils make their promises to become our Mini Police representatives. As Mini Police these pupils will be involved in projects to enhance school and the wider community of Studley Green.
Over the year the children are involved in activities and projects with the police in school and in the community of Studley Green. The children come up with their own ideas about the contribution they can make as Mini Police and they get involved with projects such as: how to tackle litter and vandalism in the area and how to make more of the recreation facilities in the Studley Green community. They will also be learning more about the police and their role in keeping us safe. The Mini Police need to show great initiative and responsibility.
Play Leaders
Our Play Leaders are a group of responsible pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6. During playtimes and lunchtimes, we encourage children to take part in physical activities and games. Our aim is to encourage children to be more active and confident. Play Leaders may also help during after-school clubs and PE lessons.
Young Interpreters
The Young Interpreter Scheme recognises the huge potential that exists within each school community for pupils of all ages to use their skills and knowledge to support new learners of English so that they feel safe, settled and valued from the start. Young Interpreters undergo training to prepare for this role and are selected on the basis of different personal qualities they may have. The support they can offer to newly arrived pupils can be very reassuring from a parent or carer's point of view at a time when their child may be adapting to substantial changes.
Reader Leaders
Reader Leaders are a group of reading role models who support younger and developing readers across our school. They are children who demonstrate a love of reading and have mastered the skills of reading confidently and fluently. Each of our Reader Leaders has been allocated a reading buddy from a younger class and each week they read and explore texts together. In each reading session, our Reader Leaders encourage their buddies to apply their word reading skills to decode new words, asking them questions to develop their understanding of what they have read and demonstrating how to develop reading fluency. At the end of each session, Reader Leaders comment positively on their buddies’ achievements and encourage them to practise new and existing skills.
Eco Team
The Eco Team is a group of pupils who really care about the environment. They want to make their school a better place by doing things that help the Earth. They also want to teach other children and their families how to take care of the planet.
Some of the types of responsibilities of the Eco Team:
- Litter picking: The Eco Team helps keep the school grounds clean by picking up litter, including in the wild areas.
- Energy saving: The Eco Team encourages everyone to save energy by turning off lights and electronics when they’re not being used.
- Recycling: The Eco Team helps with recycling around the school by making sure that everyone knows what can be recycled and where to put it.
- Creating posters and leaflets: The Eco Team designs posters and leaflets to encourage environmental responsibility.
- Staying up-to-date with environmental issues: The Eco Team keeps up-to-date with current environmental issues and shares this information with the rest of the school.
